Sample: taking a canopy photo

For anyone taking their first canopy photos with the sample app. Covers holding the phone, framing the shot and saving it to the right plot.

Sample entry. This page shows a template’s layout only. Its names, text and figures are placeholders, not real work, and it comes down before the site launches.

  1. Stand at the plot centre and open the plot in the app.

  2. Hold the phone level at about 1.3 m, with the camera pointing straight up.

  3. Wait for the level marker to turn green, then take the photo.

  4. Check the reading and press Save.

What you end up with

A saved photo on the plot’s page, with its closure reading and the time and place it was taken. One photo gives a single reading; four, one facing each direction, give a steadier plot average.

If something goes wrong

The photo comes out very dark.

Move out of direct sun, or wait for cloud. Bright sky behind leaves throws off the reading.

The app says the phone is tilted.

Hold the phone level until the marker turns green, then take the photo.

The location will not settle.

Stand still for a minute. Under dense canopy a location fix takes longer.
